A classic of vernacular French chic, the 2CV of furniture, this powder-coated steel stacking chair has been manufactured in Burgundy since 1934. Pauchard was an artisan zinc-worker and the prototype was made with tin snips and rough welding. The original was supplied to cafes and brasseries by drinks manufacturers anxious to secure customer loyalty. Although a fine example of the ‘machine’ aesthetic, about a hundred manual operations are required in its manufacture. Often copied, authentic examples have ‘Tolix’ stamped into the back of the seat. The ‘X’ for Xavier indicates it was his first design.
