Frustrated by the lamps in his workshop, which could not be angled to suit the task in hand, engineer Jean-Louis Domecq designed his own. After a few years spent fine-tuning the design and getting it into production, he established a company dedicated to marketing the robust, articulated lamps, using his own initials (as they are pronounced in French) for its name: Ji eL Dé. Designed in 1950.
