Honoré de Balzac, who described himself as a hermit and a vagrant, was one of the great geniuses of French literature. Matthew Hilton, who named this armchair and footstool in honour of the author of La Comedie Humaine, is one of the great geniuses of contemporary British furniture design. His work – a cool version of mid-century modernism inspired on occasions by Oscar Niemeyer’s elegant forms – was spotted when a student by Joseph Ettedgui and Paul Smith, and first produced by SCP. The well-padded Balzac had a punishing work schedule: Hilton’s voluptuous, well-padded armchair allows you to retreat from your own. A fabric batch label guarantees classic status.
