Michael Thonet industrialised the manufacture of furniture. He also established a system of modular design and pioneered flat-pack distribution. The Thonet company exported all over the world and in some territories bentwood chairs were the only contemporary furniture. But Thonet chairs enjoyed special esteem amongst Europe’s cafe society and its intellectual elite: they were chosen as exemplars of modern design by Adolf Loos and Le Corbusier who said ‘this chair has nobility’. In this example, backrest and armrest are made from a single piece of solid beech. A metal ‘Thonet’ badge is under the frame.
