Born in Granada in 1871, Fortuny moved to Paris and then Venice where he made his home in 1889. Before he made his reputation with printed silks, he was a stage designer of some artistic and technical ingenuity: he is sometimes claimed to have created the first dimmer switch. Fortuny’s patent theatrical lights, monumental demonstrations of his idiosyncratic theories on diffusion, were manufactured by AEG and can still be seen in his Venetian Palazzo Pesaro degli Orfei. Designed in 1907.
