The collection comprises 54 pieces, each chosen by Terence Conran, which span more than a century of design – from Thonet’s bentwood chair to Matthew Hilton’s Light extending table – and are a glorious blend of function and pure, luxurious form. Together, they offer an intriguing insight into what drives designers: whether it’s pushing technical boundaries or exploring new materials (Panton, Ercolani, Sapper); reflecting or rejecting the times in which they live (Race, Riss, Superstudio); or simply creating furniture and lighting that meet their own, personal requirements (the Eames, Domecq). Every item in the collection has a role to play in today’s homes, whether as a dramatic focal point or a complement to existing furniture. There are the über-luxe pieces, such as the iconic Eames Lounge chair and Fortuny’s glamorous floor lamp, as well as the smaller, ‘quieter’ designs, such as the charming Isokon Penguin Donkey by Egon Riss – its panniers perfectly proportioned to house that 1930s phenomenon, the ‘paperback’ book. Prices for the collection range from less than £100 to slightly more than £5,000 and each piece is a genuine, authorised version of the original design.
