Description

Details

Designed in 2013 and first presented at Milan’s annual Mindcraft exhibition, the Beetle Swivel Chair in premium Sierra cappuccino leather is the creation of young design duo, Enrico Fratesi and Stine Gam, and is inspired by the shape, shell and structure of the eponymous insect.

GamFratesi found the anatomy of the beetle captivating; the structure is composed of different plates separated by thin sutures, and it is this external shell that supports and protects the animal’s body. All of these elements are perfectly linked and work together in a way that fascinated the designers.

The design of the chair reinterprets the characteristic elements of the beetle’s body: rigid on the outside and soft within, while maintaining optimum comfort and superior functionality. The seat shell of the Beetle Swivel Chair is created using laminated moulded veneer, and shaped with sumptuous padding for ultimate comfort.

The chair is upholstered in a luxurious Sierra cappuccino leather, which is impeccably finished with intricate black leather piping, while the swivel base features sleek black powder-coated steel legs that would accent any workspace or living area.

Also available in black powder-coated steel or polished brass four-legged models with velvet upholstery in assorted colours.

GamFratesi

GamFratesi studio was founded in 2006 by Danish architect Stine Gam and Italian architect Enrico Fratesi. The studio is based in Copenhagen, though Gam and Fratesi are continuously travelling between Italy and Denmark for development and research of new projects. GamFratesi takes its creative drive from a fusion of tradition and renewal and in an experimental approach to their chosen materials and techniques.

With their dual traditional background, the design team draw on classic Danish furniture and craft tradition as well as the classic Italian intellectual and conceptual approach. Understanding a tradition and addressing it actively in the workshop makes it possible to expand on it. From this cross-cultural substrate they create furniture that respectfully reflects tradition while also featuring unique embedded stories, symbols and associations, often expressed in a minimalist idiom. GamFratesi aim to create furniture that illustrates the process and the techniques that created it, and which reflect a persistent exploration of the diverse border zone between harmony and disharmony.
