The esteemed manufacturer behind the iconic Egg Chair, the PK80 Day Bed and the Swan Sofa, Danish design house Fritz Hansen is guided by the philosophy that a single piece of furniture can enhance an entire space. Never compromising on quality, craftsmanship or comfort, Fritz Hansen’s creations are truly timeless classics.
Founded in Denmark in 1872 by cabinet-maker Fritz Hansen, the eponymous design house is renowned across the globe for crafting furniture, lighting and accessories using the highest-quality materials. Constantly on the forefront of modern technology, Fritz Hansen’s son Christian led the design house to experiment with steam-bending birch, a technique that still features prominently in its creations. Working alongside designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Poul Kjærholm and Christian Dell, Fritz Hansen’s creations are still coveted today.
Collaborating with contemporary designers such as Jaime Hayon, Piero Lissoni, Kasper Salto and Cecilie Manz, Fritz Hansen keeps its extensive collection firmly in the modern age. Turning its hand to lighting, Denmark-based lighting manufacturer Lightyears has been part of Fritz Hansen since 2015. Working closely with internationally renowned designers and architects, Lightyears utilises the latest in lighting technology to continue Fritz Hansen’s honed tradition of quality, timeless design.
Exclusive Egg Chair in Velvet
Arne Jacobsen's instantly recognisable Egg Chair is a hero of mid-century design. It is exclusively available at The Conran Shop in Kvadrat's Gentle 2 upholstery, manufactured by Fritz Hansen.
The Egg was crafted using new techniques for its time, with Jacobsen being the first to utilise a strong foam inner shell underneath the chair’s upholstery. Using a unique process, Jacobsen tested and prototyped its shape and form using clay in his home studio.
The chair sits atop a polished aluminium base and its intricate configuration requires bespoke upholstery. This edition boasts Febrik's new wool blend for Kvadrat, specially sourced from The Netherlands and marks the first time that the chair is available to purchase in a velvet finish.
