Alvar Aalto was one of the founding members of Finnish manufacturer, Artek. Embracing strong individuality with a focus on designing predominantly for humanity, he masterminded functional and dynamic pieces for both public and personal spaces. A successful architect, urban planner and designer, Aalto was deeply inspired by nature and landscapes of Finland.
Aalto's designs embody his warmth, humanity and common sense, driven by the mindset that "We should work for simple, good, undecorated things, but things which are in harmony with the human being and organically suited to the little man in the street." The mastermind behind several establishments, private residences and furniture, examples include the Maison Louis Carré Bazoches-sur-Guyonne, France, the Savoy Vase and the Bench 153B.
Using mainly birch, spruce and beech wood in his creations, including the Tea Trolley and the Stool 60, Aalto completed these using intricate curving and laminating techniques, refusing to use artificial materials, which he considered too distant from nature. The 'Founding Father of Organic Design,' together with his wife and partner Aino, the duo left behind grandiose creations forever in tune with the times. Exclusive Stool 60 in Linoleum & Natural Lacquered Birch
Newly premiered and only available at The Conran Shop, Alvar Aalto's career-defining Stool 60 is reintroduced in a fusion of linoleum and natural lacquered birch, complete with a complementary colour palette.
Designed in 1933, the iconic Stool 60 represents the pinnacle of functionalist furniture design, characterised by its revolutionary curved L-leg. This edition is intricately fashioned from solid birch wood in Finland, topped by a linoleum seat. The natural and tactile qualities of the linoleum offer an enduring, low-maintenance and elegant finish.
Commissioned for the municipal library at Viipuri, the stackable, versatile seating solution came about by bending a piece of birch to a 90° angle. Thus, the innovative L-leg was formed, eliminating the need for a complicated framework or support and creating Aalto's signature streamlined aesthetic.
