DESIGNER

Eero Saarinen

Finnish-American architect and designer Eero Saarinen was one of the most prolific and diverse industrial designers of the 20th century, creating instantly recognisable pieces such as the Pedestal or ‘Tulip’ tables and the Womb chair, which remain world-renowned to this day.

A lifelong friend of design legend Florence Knoll, Saarinen collaborated with notable designers such as Charles and Ray Eames throughout his illustrious career. Saarinen was born into the design world, with his father Eliel working as the Director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art and his mother Loja a world-famous textile designer, but Eero is best known today for his neo-futuristic style and working closely with Knoll, which still exclusively produces his pieces.

A leader of the second-generation modernists, Saarinen pushed material and aesthetic boundaries to achieve forms and silhouettes the like of which had never been seen before. Among his outstanding projects are the Dulles International Airport in Washington, DC, The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, the TWA Terminal at Kennedy International Airport, and the CBS headquarters in New York.

Saarinen Outdoor Dining Table in White Resin

With the Pedestal collection, designer Eero Saarinen vowed to address the “ugly, confusing, unrestful world” he observed underneath chairs and tables – a so-called “slum of legs.” First introduced in 1956, the elegant Saarinen Dining Table, whose sweeping silhouette provides the perfect antithesis to the typical clutter found under chairs and tables, is a linchpin of the Pedestal collection.
