Constantly striving towards organic simplicity, iconic Danish designer Hans J. Wegner was a visionary in his field. Lauded for his ability to create sculptural beauty, comfort and outstanding stability, Wegner designed over 500 different chairs in a feat that earnt him the reputation as one of the 20th century’s most prolific designers.
Beginning his career as a cabinet maker, Hans J. Wegner was dedicated to showcasing the inner workings of a piece of furniture through its exterior. With a profound respect for the properties of wood and exacting joinery techniques, Wegner went on to design furniture pieces for the new city hall in Århus alongside Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller. Establishing a partnership with Carl Hansen & Søn in 1949, Wegner went on to design some of his most iconic creations.
Demonstrating his insightful craftmanship in each piece he designed, Hans J. Wegner’s creations include the iconic Shell Chair, Elbow Chair and the CH338 Elliptical Dining Table. An Honorary Doctor of the Royal College of Art and winner of countless international accolades, including the Lunning Prize and the Grand Prix at Milan Triennale, Wegner’s designs have also been honoured with places in the permanent collection of New York’s MoMA and Die Neue Sammlung in Munich.
CH24 Wishbone Chair with Painted Wood Frame & Natural Paper Cord Seat
Expertly re-released by Carl Hansen & Søn, this painted wood and natural paper cord edition of the iconic Wishbone CH24 Chair was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1949 and is still crafted today to his exacting standards.
Inspired by a portrait of Danish merchants sitting in traditional Ming chairs, the classic chair is characterised by its distinctive Y detail. Offering back support, stability and a unique aesthetic, the chair’s wonderfully sculptural shape allows for freedom of movement and superior comfort.
Available in light blue, white, red and black finishes, the chair is crafted with a gently rounded beech wood top rail and wonderfully sculptural shape. With a seat beautifully hand-woven from 120 metres of paper cord, more than 100 production steps are taken to craft this exquisite chair.
