Exclusively available at The Conran Shop, this Stool 60 in grey with a smoky-blue linoleum seat was designed by legendary Finnish designer Alvar Aalto in 1933 for Artek.
Exquisitely crafted from birch wood, the stool’s frame is topped with a smoky-blue linoleum seat and finished with a muted grey stain that is exclusively available at The Conran Shop.
Representing the pinnacle of functionalist furniture design and characterised by its revolutionary curved L-leg, Stool 60 was designed with the goal of creating a stackable, versatile seating solution.
The concept was born when Aalto was asked to design the building and furniture for the municipal library at Vyborg, at the eastern edge of Finland, which led him to invent the innovative L-leg. By bending a piece of birch to a curved 90° angle, the L-leg could be fastened directly to the seat, eliminating the need for complicated framework or support and creating Aalto’s signature streamlined and simple aesthetic.
The instantly recognisable Stool 60 is crafted today to exacting standards by Artek, created with birch wood in a selection of vibrant and muted seat colours to suit every interior.
