This Homage to the Square rug is an original design by German-born American artist and educator, Josef Albers, which has been beautifully transformed into a hand-knotted rug by Christopher Farr.
Produced in association with the Josef & Anni Albers Foundation, this handwoven Aubusson tapestry rug showcases the disciplined approach to composition found in Albers’ world-renowned ‘Homage to the Square’ series. Each painting consisted of three or four squares of solid planes of colour nested within one another concentrically. Albers’ influential colour theory was based on the idea that colour, as opposed to form, ‘is the primary medium of pictorial language’.
One of the most prominent teachers at the legendary Bauhaus design school, Albers was instrumental in bringing the doctrines of European modernism to American art and design.
Beautifully hand-woven from 100% wool, the Homage to the Square rug recreates an original Albers painting using the traditional Aubusson tapestry technique to produce its signature concentric pattern of squares, seen here in blue grey and off-white fibres.
Since 1988, Christopher Farr has been at the forefront of contemporary rug design. Utilising only the finest yarn and dyes and collaborating with the most talented weavers from across the world, the creation of a Christopher Farr piece is a painstaking process that results in rugs that are nothing less than works of art.
Hand-knotted by artisans in India from hand-spun wool, the Homage to the Square rug arrives beautifully packaged, displaying its unique edition number on the reverse.
With just 150 available, this limited edition Christopher Farr rug offers the unique opportunity to invest in a stunning collision between art and textiles.
