Espírito do Brasil: Spring/Summer 2016

This spring, The Conran Shop presents Espírito do Brasil – a covetable and unique edit inspired by Brazil and its architecture, design, landscape, culture and lifestyle – from the mid-twentieth century to present day. The edit features furniture and lifestyle accessories, bringing together iconic designs, new and emerging talent as well as vintage pieces, all of which capture the spirit and imagination of Brazil.

The Espírito do Brasil – or Spirit of Brazil – collection will travel through Brazil along the coastline, from the south to the north. The design narrative begins in the countryside of São Paulo, where classic and modern designs with an architectural sensibility have been curated to illustrate elegant Apartamento Conceito (or Apartment Concept). In late spring, The Conran Shop turns to the verdant landscapes of the Espírito Santo state for al fresco dining and entertainment in the hills, combining natural materials, rustic textures and recycled crafted sculptures. In high summer The Conran Shop arrives in Trancoso, the fishing village on Brazil’s Bahia coast; its playful beach spirit and laid-back marina lifestyle is brought to life by mixing vintage pieces, outdoor furniture, food and drink in a lively and picturesque setting.

Launching with Apartment Conceito as the first phase of Espírito do Brasil, The Conran Shop’s room settings are created in spacious, open-plan apartments furnished with classic designs combined with sculptural objects. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow for views over the living wall of banana trees and fern plants by Arnott & Mason, which conjures up visions of the rainforest and is reminiscent of Lina Bo Bardi’s renowned Casa de Vidro (Glass House).

The living room area showcases exclusive products such as the contemporary clean-lined Clarence sofa in green velvet, styled with handmade, striking Geometric Corded cushions by The Conran Shop in colour blocks of burnt orange, dark green, navy and black. The glass Mush coffee table and solid oiled walnut Mirah armchair by Brazilian designer Jader Almeida demonstrate the deep appreciation for fine details in his modern designs, combined with a mid-century handwriting. Hanging above are the yellow and white Spokes pendant lights designed by Garcia Cumini for Foscarini in 2015, casting spoke-like shadows on the surrounding walls and ceilings for the ultimate illumination effect.

Bertoia’s iconic Diamond armchair with an 18k gold finish is an elegant focal point in the living room area, accompanied by the distinctive, architectural Hillside shelving in bright yellow. Above hang handmade tribal animal masks by Ethic & Tropic, crafted from black palm sourced from Central America.

In the dining room, gracefully lined solid walnut Bossa side chairs with rattan lattice backrests surround the Dinn dining table, which has sophisticated proportions, carbon steel legs and a walnut top – both are handcrafted in Brazil by Almeida and exclusive to The Conran Shop. The table is set with hand-thrown Foculo tableware in black and terracotta red. Hanging above is the colourful five pendant glass cluster chandelier, Cluster 5 Vitro Lux, designed by Sarah Coulson and exclusive to The Conran Shop.

The colour palette draws inspiration from the rainforest with natural hues and vibrant vegetable dyes throughout, especially in The Conran Shop’s bedroom linens and textiles. The exclusive Clarence bed has a tan leather frame and is dressed with an indigo blue, washed linen throw from Maison de Vacances. The bed is layered with The Conran Shop’s hand-guided, embroidered linen cushions Ipanema and Triangle – the motifs inspired by iconic tile patterns of traditional Brazilian beachside pavements.

Hanging above the bed is the uniquely shaped Beehive pendant brass light by Marc de Groot, which is inspired by the structure of the honeycomb, each facet of the connected hexagons creates a captivating mingling of light and shade. Almeida’s Blade rattan bench and Magnus Long’s Stix side table, both exclusive to The Conran Shop, complete the room setting. There is also a dressing area, where the contemporary Tray desk in walnut by neri&hu is combined with Gubi’s Beetle chair in navy velvet upholstery and golden legs. Atop the dressing table sits colourful decorative glassware, and the Loose hanger in walnut gives the dressing area a stylish and functional solution for coats and accessories. Extending from the bedroom is the en suite wet room by Senso, where the continuous appearance of smooth concrete creates a spa-like ambience.
