Marking the hotly anticipated return of Paris Design Week, The Conran Shop Paris is celebrating with 'Cocoon,' an enthralling installation by British design duo Isabel + Helen. On display from 9th to 18th September, the installation was launched with an exclusive party, after a two-year hiatus at the hands of the global pandemic.
'Cocoon' is a series of wooden stools wrapped live by Isabel + Helen's innovative device. Each stool is slowly enveloped by a rotating device of nine colourful spools, forming part giant loom and part contemporary artwork while creating a flexible outer shell from its angular shape. Informed by nature, particularly the way insects capture their prey, the device gradually envelops its inhabitant, each growing larger until the stool is swaddled within its outer coating.
It takes 1000 meters of thread and up to 24 laborious hours of weaving to form a Cocoon Stool, allowing the artists to be placed at the heart of the concept as spectators of their own work, left to admire the rotation of the device and the object gradually taking shape, with a slow, graceful and poetic movement. A limited number of just 12 pieces will be made during Paris Design Week and then offered for sale, exclusively at our Rue du Bac store.
Cocoon's makers, Isabel + Helen, met while studying at the prestigious Chelsea College of Art and were joined by their love for analogue design processes and minimalist cinematics. Since 2012, they have expanded their practise with experimental installations borrowed from engineering and animated sculptures, at the intersection of art and design.
Their work is underpinned by a continuous exploration of movement, materials and mechanisms, as they seek to simplify often complex ideas and ambitions, translating them into something accessible and relatable for all; honest and unpretentious, but also deceptive in its apparent simplicity.
To launch Cocoon and our return to Paris Design Week in style, we held an exclusive party on 9th September, filled with our dear friends, delightful drinks and a curated DJ soundtrack. Curious spectators got to immerse themselves in our new-season exclusives from Carl Hansen & Son, PP Møbler, as well as our latest collaborations with the likes of Matthew Hilton, Magnus Long, and more. Finally, we also unveiled the characterful Club Office from Vitra, an innovative solution to the post-pandemic workspace.
