Originally designed by Kaare Klint in 1930 for the Danish Prime Minister Thorvald Stauning, the large Red Armchair is crafted by Carl Hansen & Søn artisans from solid soaped oak and premium Sif leather.
Crafted from delicately soaped oak, the Red Armchair is accented with premium Sif leather upholstery from Carl Hansen & Søn: a full-grain, uncoated pure aniline ox hide with high breathability that will age with patina and grace.
Gathering inspiration from long-existing archetypes, Klint studied several English chair designs, including the iconic Chippendale, and combined elements to create a new piece with a modern aesthetic and superior support.
One of three sizes, also available without armrests, the Red Chair Series was designed for the Danish Prime Minister’s office and is still to this day used by the country’s leader. Winning international acclaim and displayed at the Danish Museum of Art and Design and the Barcelona International Exposition, the Red Armchair is an iconic and innovative piece that holds a significant role in Danish furniture history.
