Enthused by systematic design and industrial processes, Prouvé called himself 'the factory man'. Perhaps reacting against a family tradition of making decorative ceramics for leading Art Nouveau architects, Prouvé practised a sort of functionalist furniture design that, in comparison, makes Le Corbusier look like a Rococo eccentric. Prouvé's furniture is often found in French schools.
This 1934 design makes the load-paths explicit: the lightly loaded front legs are in narrow tubes, but the more weight-bearing rear legs are larger section hollow fabrications.
