Designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1949, as one of the first models created especially for Carl Hansen & Son, the classic Wishbone chair was introduced the following year and has been in continual production ever since.
Inspired by a portrait of Danish merchants sitting in traditional Ming chairs, this original design showcases the ergonomic sensibility which defines the antique Chinese chair.
With its gently rounded top rail and wonderfully sculptural shape, this lightweight chair allows freedom of movement and superior comfort, making it an ideal piece for both work and relaxation.
The characteristic ‘Y’ detail provides back support and stability to the steam-bent top, also inspiring the chair’s namesake.
More than 100 production steps are carried out by hand to create this masterpiece, and the seat is beautifully hand woven from 120 metres of paper cord that can last up to 50 years.
The Wishbone chair is an excellent example of Wegner’s constant striving towards organic simplicity to create sculptural beauty, comfort and outstanding stability.
Available in a broad range of wood finishes and colours, so components can be mixed and matched to find the perfect chair for individual needs.
