Designer Eero Saarinen created the ground-breaking Womb Sofa in 1946 at Florence Knoll's request for a design that was ‘like a basket full of pillows’. With this demand for superior comfort in mind, Saarinen designed the ergonomic, enveloping Womb Sofa, upholstered here in Cato’ fabric in an assortment of hues.
The Saarinen Womb Sofa boasts a polished chrome-plated steel base, with an upholstered, moulded fibreglass shell. This ultimate designer sofa doesn’t compromise on practicality or style, blending organic shape with a unique aesthetic.
Like many of Saarinen’s furniture designs, the Womb Sofa required production techniques and materials that were still in the infancy of their existence. Saarinen and Knoll innovatively found a boat builder in New Jersey who was experimenting with fibreglass and resin to help successfully develop manufacturing methods for the new design.
Inspired by a hand-woven aesthetic, the Cato fabric that this Womb Sofa is upholstered in was introduced in 1961 and is crafted from a wool-mix composition, with an exaggerated texture that creates the ultimate accent.
The enveloping, sculptural form of the Womb Sofa continues to be one of the most iconic and recognised representations of mid-century Scandinavian style, making it an ideal investment piece for both traditional and modern interior schemes.
The Womb Sofa is available in in brown, fire red, green, grey, ivory, natural and sand hues, making it a truly versatile addition to your space and a timeless design, sure to endure though the years.
